CURATORIAL STATEMENT WITH QUOTES FROM THE ARTIST

“Why did i do it ?.... the plain truth is my gaze fell on an easel and I saw images/pictures/paintings/photographs”

Punch Creative Arena proudly showcases Eric Belgrave’s enthralling new series of photographs. Each image is culled from the pallets of four painters: Gordon Webster, Alison Chapman-Andrews,Ras Ishi Butcher, and Ras Akyem Ramsay.

“It started with an easel given to me by Gordon Webster or maybe earlier with a sieve given to me by sculptor and painter, the late Phillip Moore”

For Belgrave the process was addictive and therapeutic; turning his lens to the artists preparatory marks enabled a kind of escapism.

“From easel to pallet to table to bench to wherever the paint landed.”

Belgrave creates dynamic compositions with seductive detail.
He invites the viewer to observe method in art making, his and theirs. With colour and gesture, the images reveal personal signatures that often remain private.
